Abstract

Koyré hat bereits in verschiedenen sehr aufschlußreichen Arbeiten, es seien seine ausgezeichneten ,,Études galiléennes'' [Actualités Scientifiques et Industrielles. 852, 75 p. (1939; JFM 65.1080.05); 853, 80 p. (1939; JFM 65.1082.03); 854, 188 p. (1939; JFM 65.1082.04)] hervorgehoben, die Dynamik des 16. und 17. Jahrhunderts behandelt. Er verbindet in seinen Studien in vortrefflicher Weise geistesgeschichtliche und physikhistorische Betrachtung. Die vorliegende Publikation behandelt die widerstreitenden Anschauungen über die Bahn eines auf die rotierende Erde frei fallenden, schweren Körpers in der Zeit von Kepler bis Newton. Dabei werden auch die hypothetischen Lösungen des Problems der Bahnkurve eines zum Erdmittelpunkt fallenden schweren Körpers betrachtet. Der Verf. bietet uns eine Fülle weniger bekannter Texte des 17. Jahrhunderts, meist in der Originalsprache und zugleich in englischer Übersetzung. Der von einem Turm fallende Körper müßte nach der Meinung vieler (z. B. G. Ricciolis) bei rotierender Erde während des Falles beträchtlich nach Westen, nach der Ansicht anderer (G. Galilei 1632, besonders G. A. Borelli 1668) im Sinne neuer mechanischer Anschauungen aber nach Osten, wenn auch nur wenig, abweichen. Bei der hypothetischen Behandlung des Falles zum Erdmittelpunkt kommt der Antikopernikaner J. G. Lochner 1614 in einer sonderlichen Entwicklung zu einer um einen Kegel laufenden Spirallinie als Fallkurve, während Galilei 1632 auf Grund einer eleganten, aber falschen Ableitung zu einem Halbkreis als Bahn gelangt. Besonders interessant, aber ebenso falsch ist P. Fermats Theorie. Es werden weiter die widerstreitenden Anschauungen der I. Bullialdus, G. Riccioli, J. Gregory, G. A. Borelli, Stefano degli Angeli, Michele Manfredi und Diego ZereIli behandelt. Die breiten Diskussionen lassen erkennen, wie ungeheuer schwer es war, den Weg von der ruhenden zur bewegten Erde zu gehen. Der Verf. hat sich durch die Erschließung einer ignota litteratura außerordentlich verdient gemacht.
