Model memori kerja amat bervariasi dalam tulisan Shah dan Miyake (2005). Penulis memilih model multikomponen Baddeley dan Hitch (1974) sebagai model asli dan model Cowan sebagai model yang lebih luas. Model multikomponen menenkankan pada keberadaan komponen eksekutif pusat dan dua subsistem putaran fonologi dan papan sketsa visuospasial.
