SNOW SATELLITE ALGORITHM VERIFICATION BESED ON THE GROUND SNOW OBSERVATION USING A GROUND MICROWAVE RADIOMETER

Abstract

In the previous research, we developed a snow algorithm for snow depth and snow grain size based on the microwave radiative transfer theory and validated by using the in-situ snow depth data at the ground-based stations in the northern hemisphere and the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for the Earth Observation System (AMSR-E) on Aqua launched by NASA in 2002.In this study, we verified the correctness of this snow satellite algorithm by the ground snow observation using the ground microwave radiometer (GBMR (Ground Based Microwave Radiometer)) in Sapporo. In the cases with the wet snow, the results of validation were shown poor correspondence of observation value and estimation value. In contrast, in the cases with the dry snow, the results of validation were shown good correspondence of observation value and estimation value.
