Development of Auto-driving System of Tunnel Boring Machine

Abstract

Due to the decrease of the labour resulting in the unpopularity of the construction industry among the young engieers and aging of the skilled workers, robotization and automation have been developed and introduced into the construction industry. As one of the effective methods for excavating the tunnel in the hard rock, tunnel boring machine has been widely used and corresponding automating technologies have been advanced.The authors have newly developed the auto-driving system of the tunnel boring machine so that it could run along the plannedline automatically using the jacks selected based upon the location of the machine. The validity of the system has been confirmed through the actual use in the tunnel construction project.
