Three different designs of 230 kV high ampacity potheads were evaluated to determine: how the ampacity ratings can be increased by forced circulation of cooled or refrigerated oil; the influence of 3 different types of low-viscosity oils on the thermal characteristics of the 3 pothead designs; effect of the 3 oils on pothead materials and vice versa; and projected performance of the potheads at ratings between 69 kV and 500 kV based on extrapolated data. Details of the pothead designs, testing facilities and procedures, and results are presented. (LCL)
