The neutron and delayed neutron precursor contents and the temperature of a reactor are treated as random variables participating in a multiplicative stochastic process. It is shown that stationary fluctuations in these variables are moderated by the presence of delayed neutrons, a large neutron source, and a large negative temperature coefficient. Reactor instability with a positive temperature coefficient is discussed in terms of the non-existence of a stationary process. (auth)
