
One of the key requirements for surface treatment processes in practical applications, is the ability to reproduce the same treatment using the same parameters. This is one of the problems often encountered in laser shock peening (LSP), because there is no direct method of control deployed, without the need for time consuming residual stress measurement so far. Hence, a faster method of quantifying an LSP treatment is required. Another often overlooked problem is the lack of control of the focal spot, and this could cause major deviation because it leads to results that are very far from the desired one. This non control of the focal spot is caused by the lack of reliable laser metrology system which changes the desired power density for the treatment. This paper develops a methodology based on the treatment of standard Almen strips already used in conventional shot peening and try to adapt it for LSP. The Almen deviation is related to the sensitivity to power density, spot diameter versus focal length and overlap.
