INSTC: India-Russia’s Trade to Get a Major Boost

Abstract

The 7200 km International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) is a multi-mode transport network linking the Indian Ocean and the Persian Gulf to the Caspian Sea via Iran, and onward to northern Europe via St. Petersburg in Russia. Throughout this network, freight between India, Russia, Iran, Europe, and Central Asia will move through sea, rail, and road. This route is in sharp contrast to much longer and costly Suez Canal route earlier used by India for the transport of goods from India to Russia. This new route will help connect India to Russia within 16-21 days at competitive freight rates leading to the development of trade on the INSTC.
