Beyond Economic Productivity

Beyond Economic Productivity

Abstract

Economic productivity is seen as the relationship between the output produced and the inputs necessary to produce it. However, this tells nothing about the external impact of the process. In this paper we will develop a chain of equations that compute economic productivity and adjust it in order to capture also the social and environmental implications of the economic development. The research is based on input-output indexes used to emphasize productivity, together with its social fairness component, human development perspective and its sustainability over time. The fundamental research hypothesis of this paper is: how should we adjust the measurement of economic productivity in order for it to capture the human, social and environmental perspectives? We highlight the importance of the ecological reserves and the importance of addressing productivity from a perspective that transcends the limited economic view.
