Disciplinary Sanctions for Misconduct in Tennis

Authors: Despina Mavromati;

Disciplinary Sanctions for Misconduct in Tennis

Abstract

The decision rendered by the Internal Adjudication Panel of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) in the matter of ITF v. I. Nǎstase discusses a number of breaches of the "Welfare Policy" of the ITF Fed Cup Regulations by the Captain of the Romanian Fed Cup Team. From the “total disrespect to officials", the “sexual innuendo” and the “racially insensitive” comments to the “harassment of a member of the media”, this note presents and comments on how cases of misconduct in tennis are dealt with by the internal adjudication panels of the ITF. It also discusses when aggravating and mitigating circumstances are taken into consideration for the calculation of the sanction.
