Many studies have examined the reasons behind college drop-outs. In contrast to the literature, this study focuses on the impact of a situation of being poor controlling for parents’ characteristics, spouse characteristics and success indicator. Using Cox Proportional Hazard model, the study then finds that the individuals who are from poor families have lower hazard rate of leaving college relative to those who are from non-poor families. When the same analysis is done under two different settings (namely, under academic-issue framework and financial-issue framework), it turns out that the effect of poor variable is still significant under financial-issue framework but it is no longer significant under academic-issue framework.
