This article explores connections between religiosidad popular and liturgical catechesis, as well as the ways Hispanic popular religion is a culturally specific form of liturgical catechesis. This is not to suggest that religiosidad popular's value lay solely in its usefulness as a catechetical tool, but rather that fascinating similarities exist between it and liturgical catechesis, and that these similarities warrant further study. Specifically, this article examines religiosidad popular's numinous and critical dimensions, since both are foundational to modern catechesis. It concludes by considering pastoral challenges to viewing religiosidad popular as liturgical catechesis.
