It refers to an attitude that places limits on the possibilities of aesthetic cognition by affirming prevailing social conditions while failing to even register the suffering that these conditions generate. However, affirmation cannot be reduced to this negative interpretation. On the contrary, the concept of affirmation provides necessary presuppositions both for aesthetic cognition and for the successful work of art.
