Abstract : A design for a d.c. electric drive for the M113A2 based on available state-of-the-art components is proposed. The proposed electric drive has a specific weight of about 9 lb/hp. Efforts were made to make this estimated weight as realistic as possible; auxiliary components such as field supply, cooling systems, braking resistors, and controls account for 1 lb/hp and a miscellaneous category adds another 0.44 lb/hp. As proposed the vehicle design for the M113A2 meets the performance requirements of 40 mi/h and a maximum sprocket torque of 17,000 ft/lb. It has no separate water propulsion system; however, a water propulsion system powered by the alternator can be added without disturbing the land propulsion system. (Author)
