ABSTRACT The pursuit of oil and gas in the former Soviet Union poses both technical and political challenges to Western companies. This paper discusses how some of the difficulties were overcome while drilling horizontal wells in Western Siberia. It describes various combinations of Russian and Western technology which have been used to provide the most cost effective methods. It also provides a general understanding of political and environmental issues involved in drilling in Siberia which are largely unknown to the West.
