UPPER ALBIAN BENTHIC FORAMINIFERS NEW IN WEST TEXAS

Abstract

Part of the Lower Cretaceous Gulf Coast carbonate platform is exposed in west Texas and mapped as the Albian Devils River Formation. Two species of larger benthic foraminifers are described for the first time from this unit that have biostratigraphic utility. Paracoskinolina coogani n. sp. was first noted in 1977 but not named as a new species. Streptalveolina mexicana Four-cade, Tardy, and Vila is known from Mexican uppermost Albian/Lower Cenomanian strata. The Texas occurrence supports the Upper Albian age of these species. Both species are endemic to the Caribbean Province, but they appear to be related to species in the Mediterranean Province, consistent with the known paleogeographic connections between the regions, although few benthic foraminiferal species are shared.
