
Como contribuição à revisão crítica contemporânea da obra de Miguel Ángel Asturias, este estudo levanta algumas considerações sobre o contato do autor, na França, na segunda década do século XX, com o Popol Vuh e outros textos da tradição maia-quiché, assim como as reverberações de tal encontro na primeira publicação de Leyendas de Guatemala, de 1930. Tendo por base textos de James Clifford, Gordon Brotherston, Eduardo Subirats, Martin Lienhard, Jorge Schwartz, entre outros, bem como o rico material crítico que acompanha a edição da ALLCA de Cuentos y leyendas, de 2000, é proposta, aqui, uma breve análise do contexto artístico-cultural parisiense, especialmente a partir das relações epocais entre surrealismo e etnografia. A seguir, são observadas algumas questões sobre a ressignificação identitária do autor, e como o influxo surrealista e a poética dos antigos textos maias convergem como proposta estética em sua primeira obra literária publicada.
