MOMUS, ROMAN

Authors: Hersant, Yves;
Abstract

Alberti remains overlooked as a novelist. Actually his Momus, which Cecil Grayson rightly regarded as one of the strangest narrative works of all time, is appreciated only by Renaissance and Humanism scholars. Too many of them consider it as a fable, a political allegory or a mere fanciful fiction. It is therefore important to show why and how the author’s «insperatum scribendi genus» is in fact a true art of the novel: not only because it profoundly transforms the protagonist’s status, develops his adventures in a particular temporality, and gives the «historia» an unprecedented breadth and complexity, but also and above all because it makes the human condition the object of an ironic and worried questioning. Alberti does not expose preordained truths under the veil of the fable, but uses it for cognitive as well as entertaining purposes. Paradoxically, this «serious game» leads him to challenge his own humanism.
