Abstract

Treinta años después de su explosión original, el boom literario latinoamericano puede verse ahora en toda su amplitud, valorado su legado. Este fenómeno comercial, en parte resultado de la enormemente capaz agente literaria española Carmen Balcells, ha tenido ecos de gran alcance pero a veces problemáticos. Mientras que los escritores de países como Argentina, México y Colombia fueron, con mucho, los primeros en ser leídos de manera seria y generalizada en Europa y Estados Unidos (Rubén Daría, el poeta modernista más célebre de finales del siglo XIX, sólo fue aplaudido en la Península Ibérica), el estilo refrescantemente barroco y la sed de estereotipos que surgieron al sur del Río Grande también redujeron la región a un teatro de exotismo y magia: una República Bananera surrealista. Los turistas se adentraban en el hemisferio hispano en busca de míticos pueblos costeros donde hermosas mujeres comen tierra, cae una lluvia de mariposas al final del invierno y todo gitano es profeta. Lo que realmente se encuentra, por supuesto, es un presente tenso y un pasado colectivo doloroso.
