Abstract

The object, chosen for this thesis work research, is the fashion industry with its manufacturing companies. The aim of the thesis has therefore been to assess the effectiveness of the garment industry initiatives from the point of sustainable development. The thesis work aims to give a clear view into how sustainable production practices of garment producers are important in the current conditions. The methodological approach taken in this study is a mixed methodology based on, first of all, literature review, including internet sources, scientific publications dedicated to the sustainable manufacturing in general and sustainable manufacturing in textile industry, documents provided by garment producers regarding their CSR policies, journal and newspaper articles connected with the topic. In order to look deeply into the practices implemented by garment producers in terms of sustainability, the SCR methodology is used (corporate social responsibility analysis), where qualitative and quantitative characteristics were evaluated quantitatively. In order to perform particularly the performance evaluation of the practices quantitative integral approach was used, combining the analysis of economic, social and ecological effectiveness of garment industry. The results achieved while performing the SCR analysis have shown that initiatives of the companies, which are considered being sustainable, do not always correspond to this characteristic. Furthermore, the integral approach results have proven that garment industry is not socially and ecologically effective in the framework of sustainability. Therefore, recommendations for the further enhancement of the initiatives and methods implemented by garment producers were offered, as well as the model of sustainable consumption that would induce garment manufacturers to use sustainable and ethical practices. This work can be served as an information basis for sustainable production practices and for the forming of development policy elaborating sustainable economy in the framework of garment industry.
