This graduation thesis is devoted to metonymy as a semantic, word-formative and phrase-formative method through the examples of clothing items names in slang. The research contains the theoretical analysis of slang problems and peculiarities of metonymic interference and considers the specifics of metonymy in substandard English. The examples of clothing items names were taken from English slang dictionaries. It was found that the examples can be divided into groups, and basing on the analysis of such groups we can find specific features of the examples of clothing items names in substandard English. The results allow us to confirm the importance of further study of metonymy and explore its role in creation of new slang units.
