Integrated single photon sources

Abstract

Quantum optics is one of the most attractive fields today showing immense potentialin global applications. The fundamental resource here, is a single photon, which is thequantised state of light. Several high quality sources have been developed using a spon-taneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) process, however, an ideal SPDC sourceis far from being realised. Depending on the application, a trade-off in the quantumfeatures must be introduced to successfully implement such sources. In the first part of this dissertation, we present a ”plug-and-play” source of telecomwavelength heralded single photons developed on a periodically poled lithium niobatewaveguide platform. The adopted fabrication and pigtailing protocols are discussed. Finally, the source is mounted in an alignment-free package and is designed to showdesirable quantum properties, thus making it suitable for long distance applications.Classical and quantum characterisations are performed to benchmark the source quality. This device presents high stability and ease-of-use, together with quantum performanceswhich exceed by far the packaged devices shown in literature. Owing to mature sourceengineering technology, a complete flexibility over a large range of PDC wavelengths ispossible and by using a variety of filters, source properties can be tailored. The second part of the thesis focuses on an efficient tool for characterisation of photonpairs generated through SPDC in the spatial and spectral degrees of freedom. We utilisecompressive sensing (CS) and a time-of-flight spectrometer to demonstrate a proof-of-principle measurement to discretise high-dimensional states with billions of elements. Weexperimentally demonstrate the benefits of using CS as opposed to conventional methods. The simplicity and robustness of this technique opens the possibility of realising complexphotonic states in quantum protocols.
