El artículo analiza un momento de ruptura en la historia cultural de Ecuador en los años sesenta del siglo XX, especialmente en la narrativa. Los debates y los temas ilustran no sólo lo que en aquel momento se evidenció como los límites de la novela indigenista, por la que la literatura ecuatoriana fue y es conocida, sino la relación entre la narrativa y las características específicas de la sociedad ecuatoriana y su cultura.
