Abstract

Current data indicate that the neotropical moss flora consists of about 3869 species and varieties. Despite our knowledge of its distributional patterns, the areas of high diversity and endemism cannot be precisely identified, yet. More than 44% of the species and varieties are endemic to the neotropics and about 32 genera contain 30 or more species in the area. Basic catalogues of species per country or region along with methods of systematic and biogeographic analyses are necessary to examine our hypotheses on the origins of diversity and the relationships of the flora.
