We used photogrametric analysis of 1970 and 1990, td study vegetation and land use changes in Nahuatzen, Michoacan. Forest cover was constant for this period, however, forest quality in terms of tree covery and height decreased and fragmentation increased. We relate this phenomenon to the agricultural crisis in the region, and to changes in economic activity from peasantry to forestry. The environmental consequences of such changes are discussed.
