Contents This chapter describes the performance of coastal flood defences under extreme loading conditions. Special emphasis is on failure mode analyses and available models and tools used to analyse the stress and resistance of various defence types such as breakwaters, sea dikes, seawalls, beaches and dunes. Wherever available, the reader is pointed to simple tools or models and provided with more detailed reading at both design and research level.
