Uma milícia mais militar que cidadã: o recrutamento para a Guarda Nacional da Província do Rio Grande do Sul em tempos de guerra (1850-1873)

Abstract

A Guarda Nacional foi uma milícia criada pelo Império do Brasil em 1831, no início do período regencial, e era formada por todos os homens brasileiros entre 18 e 60 anos que fossem cidadãos do Império, ou seja, que pudessem votar, pelo menos, nas eleições primárias (renda igual ou superior a 100 mil réis anuais, 200 mil a partir de 1846). O serviço era obrigatório e, na maioria dos casos, gratuito. Segundo a lei que a criou, em 19 de agosto de 1831, eram funções da milícia: “defender a Constituição, a liberdade, independência e integridade do Império; para manter a obediência as leis, conservar ou restabelecer a ordem e a tranquilidade pública; e auxiliar o Exército de Linha na defesa das fronteiras e costas”.
