Infants less than 6 months of age have decreased thromboplastin generation, resulting in part from a deficiency of plasma thromboplastin component. Some factor or factors other than a low level of plasma thromboplastin component may contribute to this deficiency. By the age of 1 year the majority of infants generate thromboplastin normally, and have normal levels of plasma thromboplastin component.
