Abstract

El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo explicar las múltiples formas de pensar el republicanismo entre los conservadores católicos en Colombia, Ecuador y Perú, a través de una comparación entre estas repúblicas durante el siglo XIX. El interés central de la investigación busca conectar la conflictiva relación entre religión y política a través de una reflexión sobre la denominada “república católica”, en oposición al modelo republicano imaginado por los liberales y radicales. El papel de la Iglesia católica en el mundo moderno sería una preocupación central entre los conservadores, quienes buscaban insertar la realidad americana en un ámbito más universal donde la “civilización católica” era el punto donde se conectaban la comunidad de fieles católicos y la modernidad política. Esta inserción no sería fácil. Los conflictos políticos como resultado de este debate ideológico serían más evidente durante la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, llegando a escalar, en algunos casos, a fuertes niveles de violencia política. En este artículo, nos centraremos en tres aspectos del debate que consideramos centrales: la idea de nación, la tolerancia de cultos y la educación.
