Framing Goya in his time is a delicate exercise that does not diminish his influence nor his originality, instead it provides new opportunities to better understand both. By focusing the relationship of Goya with a revisited small part of the archive, the Diario de Madrid, during the timeframe involving the development and publication of Los caprichos, I propose new hypotheses on the reasons the painter could have had to publish the collection, its contents, and sources of inspiration such as, The Nightcap by Louis Sébastian Mercier
