MEDO E DESEJO NA MODERNIDADE: COMO OS PREGADORES ACONSELHAVAM SEUS REIS A LIDAR COM OS SENTIMENTOS? / FEAR AND DESIRE IN MODERNITY: HOW DID THE PREACHERS ADVISE THEIR KINGS TO DEAL WITH THEIR FEELINGS?

Abstract

-- Constitutive element of the moral philosophy that based the modern politics and the expansion of the Monarchies, the sacred rhetoric reinforced the humanistic mentality with the urgency of the utility of the knowledge and the universality of the feelings. Affectionate, this instruction seldom proved, at Savonarola's campfire, the supremacy of the fear against love, as announced by Machiavelli. In France, Fénelon will be one of the forerunners of this narrative, creating in the Dialogues on eloquence (1761) a mirror of preachers used in Brazil by Friar Francisco do Monte Alverne, in his Oratorial Works (1858). Late reflection of the Old Regime, the resentment gives rise to a history of feelings within the framework of culture in which the legitimacy and longevity of fear is inscribed in modern preaching, and ascertain the importance of this feeling for the constitution of History and society in the fold of modernity. KEYWORDS: History of feelings, sacred oratory, friar Francisco do Monte Alverne, François Fénelon.
