A description is provided of the constituent order typology in Bribri, following the theory of linguistic universals (Greenberg) and the functionalist theory (Payne). The first proposal is related to the propositions of implicational and non-implicational universals and their combinations belonging to the order of constituents. The second describes the tripartite distinction of semantic and syntactic roles: A (agent of the transitive clause), S (unique argument of the intransitive clause) and P (patient of the transitive clause). The latter is adequate to explain the order of the constituents in Bribri, since it is a language with an ergative-absolutive system and with split ergativity.
