Abstract

The existence of planets outside our solar system has been a licate matter in astronomy ever since the 16th-century philosopher Giordano Bruno was burned at the stake for (among other things) proposing that the universe holds an infinite number of other worlds. People are no longer set aflame in the public square for proposing the existence of extrasolar planets, but the field remains con tentious.
