This article deliberates on strategies of consumptiongovernance toward more sustainable consumption.We discuss theoretical concepts stemming from varioussocial science perspectives to (1) promote moresustainable consumption, (2) compare strategiesstemming from individualist understanding of consumerbehavior, and (3) call for a mix of strategiesacknowledging collective dimensions of consumptionto change consumer behavior in order to advance sustainableconsumption. We thereby criticize overtlyindividualistic approaches and plea for acknowledgingthe collective dimensions of consumption that shouldbe recognized in order to promote more sustainableconsumption. We outline possible contributions of thecollective dimensions in lifestyle movements and amix of stakeholders that assist in achieving more sustainableconsumption.
