Male Body Dissatisfaction

Male Body Dissatisfaction

Abstract

Body image has been traditionally considered an area of concern experienced exclusively by females. Research into this area of enquiry was driven by desires to improve treatment of eating disorder by the psychiatric community (Grogan, 2017; Thompson, Heinberg, Altabe, & Tantleff-Dunn, 1999). As eating disordered behaviour has been identified to be driven by a desire to obtain a thin body ideal, assessment of body image has been informed by these concepts. Interest into male body image has increased in the last 20 years as more diverse samples were utilised in research studies. Difference in body ideals between genders has been identified and this has resulted in the re-examination of the previously accepted belief that males do not experience body dissatisfaction. This thesis presents a qualitative study of Australian university aged males’ perceptions of male body dissatisfaction. Body dissatisfaction was observed to be prevalent in the sample, providing support for the presence of the muscular ideal reported in the literature and included aspects of related psychosocial constructs and negative biopsychosocial outcomes that have a significant impact on the lives of men. Given that male body dissatisfaction was prevalent within this sample, this suggested that appropriate gender-specific measurement tools are required to further our understanding of male body image and male body dissatisfaction. As a first step. a systematic review of male body dissatisfaction measures was conducted to inform future research and clinical practice. From this review, a third study was conducted to obtain further psychometric data for two of the reviewed measures, the Revised Male Body Attitude Scale (MBAS-R; Ryan et al., 2011) and the Male Body Dissatisfaction Scale (MBDS; Ochner et al., 2009) to determine whether these tools are appropriate for use with males in the community, clinical practice, and future research studies.
