Privilegios estamentales y reforma del clero en la crisis del Antiguo Régimen (la jerarquía de la diócesis de Orihuela ante la convocatoria de las Cortes de Cádiz)

Abstract

Ante el vacío de poder existente en España desde 1808 y deseando dotar al país de una orientación política segura, la Junta Central anunciaba por decreto el 22 de mayo de 1809 la convocatoria de Cortes Generales en el plazo máximo de un año. Con el fin de conocer las opiniones de los españoles acerca de lo que debían debatir estas Cortes la Junta se comprometía, en el mismo decreto, a recabar el parecer de ciertas autoridades y organismos oficiales sobre los asuntos considerados entonces fundamentales y perentorios. Del reino de Valencia respondieron a la circular de junio los Cabildos y Obispos de Orihuela y Segorbe y la Audiencia de Valencia. Este trabajo, basado en los informes del Cabildo y del obispo oriolanos, es un anticipo del estudio pormenorizado de estos documentos que estoy llevando a cabo actualmente.
