Abstract

Si può forse chiamare ossessione quella che Aby Warburg aveva sviluppato per un tardo dipinto di Rembrandt: "Il giuramento di Claudio Civile". L'articolo ricostruisce la storia di tale ossessione, sullo sfondo di un confronto critico con lo storico dell'arte Carl Neumann e con l'assistente dello stesso Warburg, Fritz Saxl intorno ai rapporti fra arte nordica, arte italiana e tradizione classica. Nello specchio del "Claudio Civile" entrano in gioco per Warburg cruciali questioni di (filosofia della) storia della cultura e dell’arte, nonché i concetti fondamentali della sua teoria generale dell’immagine. L'articolo è altresì corredato dalla trascrizione di documenti inediti provenienti dal Warburg Institute di Londra: una lettera di Warburg a Neumann del 22 gennaio 1927; una lettera di Saxl a Warburg risalente a prima del 25 gennaio 1927, e appunti preparatori.
