Secondo le fonti letterarie, gli acquedotti romani e le terme urbane, che essi alimentavano, rimasero in funzione fino alle Guerre Gotiche (537 d. C.). L’articolo produce le evidenze archeologiche di restauri assegnabili al IV e V secolo, individuate nel suburbio in molti tratti superstiti degli acquedotti Marcia-Tepula-Iulia, Claudia-Anio Novus e Alexandriana. La continua manutenzione degli acquedotti nella tarda Antichità pone in evidenza la prosperità dei «praedia formensia » , da questi attraversati, e che, per legge, contribuivano a fornire il denaro, la manodopera e i materiali per garantirne l’efficienza. Le evidenze testuali ed archeologiche suggeriscono che gli acquedotti nel suburbio furono impiegati con continuità per tutto il nostro periodo, per le coltivazioni, i complessi termali ed ecclesiastici, attraverso rami secondari e fistulae, integrando le risorse provenienti da cisterne d’acqua piovana, sorgenti e fiumi.
