In response to the hidden and painful self-portraits of Michelangelo the artist (from the decapitated head of Holofernes in the “pennacchio” of the Sistine Chapel, to the skin of St. Bartholomew in the Last Judgement) are no less disconcerting portraits written in verse (such as I’ ho già fatto un gozzo in questo stento and I’ sto rinchiuso come la midolla). In fact the poet («Enemy of myself», Oimmè, oimmè, ch’i’ son tradito, v. 9) reveals himself in “stony” and grotesque forms, with a shriveled and degraded corporeality, manifestation of a conscience tragically disturbed and of a bitter sullenness, perhaps even ideological and moral.
