Nel saggio vengono esaminati innanzitutto i debiti dell’estetica musicale di Busoni nei confronti dell’estetica del Romanticismo (soprattutto per quanto riguarda la concezione di teatro musicale). Il lavoro si focalizza quindi sulle due opere Turandot e Arlecchino del 1917, in cui Busoni riprende e ‘modernizza’ le maschere di ascendenza gozziana quali esse rivivono nel Romanticismo e in particolare in E.T.A. Hoffmann.
