Demens Luctus : un gesto dionisiaco del dolore

Abstract

L’articolo discute il gesto di una donna scarmigliata che protende all’indietro le braccia in segno di dolore nei sarcofagi romani con la Morte di Meleagro. M. L. Catoni riconduce lo schema alla ‘soccorritrice’ delle stele attiche per le donne morte di parto, ipotizzando che il gesto tipico del soccorso – le braccia in avanti – sia stato rovesciato in segno di rifiuto. L’autore ritiene invece che si tratti di una variante della danza delle baccanti che traduce il topos del luctus demens: l’idea che il dolore di fronte alla morte può rendere folli come il vino e l’estasi. L’attitudine tipica della follia dionisiaca viene presa a prestito per rappresentare un dolore violento e irrimediabile. La spallina della veste che cade, tipica delle baccanti, è un elemento a favore di tale interpretazione.
