Abstract

Tout commence avec la solitude pour Laurent Mauvignier. Son premier roman, Loin d’eux, explore le sentiment d’être loin des autres. Ce motif se retrouve dans Apprendre à finir et Ceux d’à côté publiés à la suite, jusqu’à faire l’objet du titre même en 2004 lorsque paraît Seuls. Mais, tandis que les premiers romans semblent se centrer sur une conscience confrontée à un groupe constitué qui seraient «eux», ou «ceux» avec qui on ne parvient pas à communiquer, Seuls décline une solitude à plusieurs. En effet, ce roman qui nous intéresse expose une série de solitudes qui se côtoient de près, sans pouvoir se rencontrer; c’est que le rendez-vous avec autrui est manqué. Ainsi ce n’est pas tant l’archétype du marginal reflet de sa propre situation d’écrivain (D. Maingueneau) qui intéresse Laurent Mauvignier, qu’une certaine forme de «singularité quelconque» (G. Agamben), caractéristique de la période contemporaine (D. Rabaté). Seuls explore les différentes facettes de la solitude à travers des personnages, mettant en place une microsociété en déshérence, une communauté incapable de rencontrer l’autre. Il s’agit d’étudier comment cette solitude à plusieurs constitue un enjeu, voire un moteur de l’écriture (en particulier pour le travail des voix), et de comprendre les interrogations sociétales que le roman soulève.
