Antiquité et poésie civile chez Carducci et Pascoli

Abstract

Nel corso della seconda metà del XIX secolo, di fronte al disagio provocato dalla civilizzazione industriale e dalle conquiste coloniali, si afferma il ritorno al passato come rifugio. Ciò si riflette in particolare nella letteratura italiana, dove il genere della poesia antica conosce una nuova età dell'oro grazie all'opera di Giosuè Carducci e di Giovanni Pascoli. Pur incarnando perfettamente il ruolo di poeti impegnati, capaci di influenzare e modellare l'opinione pubblica della nuova Italia in costruzione, scelgono di consacrare la loro poesia all'Antichità, non soltanto per l'inesauribile vivaio di immagini e di simboli che essa offre per raccontare situazioni archetipiche della storia e della condizione umana, ma per il valore pedagogico ed etico che può rivestire nella formazione del carattere degli italiani e nella definizione di una mitologia nazionale.

Au cours de la deuxième moitié du XIXe siècle, face au malaise provoqué par la civilisation industrielle et au “choc des civilisations” lors des conquêtes coloniales, s’affirme le retour au passé comme refuge. Ceci se reflète en particulier dans la littérature italienne, où le genre du poème antique connaît un nouvel âge d’or dans les œuvres de Carducci et Pascoli. Les deux poètes engagés choisissent de consacrer une partie de leur production à l’Antiquité, non seulement pour la source intarissable d’images et de symboles qu’elle offre pour raconter des situations archétypiques de l’histoire et de la condition humaine, mais aussi pour la valeur pédagogique et éthique qu’elle revêt dans la formation du caractère des Italiens et dans la définition d’une mythologie nationale.
