Abstract

En este artículo mostramos, en primer lugar, cuáles fueron las principales características del crecimiento económico moderno (CEM) en el Valle Medio del Ebro (VME), los resultados macroeconómicos alcanzados en el largo plazo y la evolución de su especialización productiva (inicialmente agraria y compartida posteriormente con una nueva especialización industrial). A continuación, ofrecemos las principales características de la trayectoria económica seguida por sus dos componentes territoriales (las regresivas Zonas de Montaña y el progresivo Eje del Valle), con especial atención al análisis de la evolución económica de su componente progresivo, el Eje del Valle, muy localizado en (parte de) las tres provincias que bordean el río Ebro.El crecimiento demográfico y productivo estuvo cada vez más concentrado en este Eje, que durante la primera mitad del siglo XX apoyó la creación de un círculo virtuoso a través de una base exportadora alimentaria. Un CEM que en la segunda mitad del siglo estableció una nueva base exportadora metalúrgica inicialmente vinculada a una industria auxiliar, más tarde protagonizada por el complejo de la automoción (con una estructura industrial más diversificada en el caso de La Rioja), en un contexto de creciente globalización e integración económica en la CEE.Su ubicación en el centro del cuadrante NE peninsular y el aprovechamiento de las infraestructuras de conexión con los principales centros de la economía española (y el continente europeo), ha jugado un papel importante en la consolidación de dicha trayectoria industrial y en la consecución a finales del siglo XX de unos niveles de eficiencia superiores a la media española.
