From Mae Preta to Mae Desamparada: Maternity and Public Health in Post-Abolition Bahia

Abstract

Na alvorada do seculo XX, a classe medica desempenhou o papel importante de diagnosticar e proporcionar solucoes para as transicoes politicas e sociais da epoca, com o objetivo de incentivar a modernizacao do pais. O conceito de modernizacao demonstrou os limites historicos formados pelas desigualdades raciais e de classe, mas tambem evidenciou a difusao de ideias novas sobre a harmonia social brasileira. Este artigo analisa a tensao discursiva entre uma imagem nostalgica da mae preta que celebrou a contribuicao cultural dela para o desenvolvimento das relacoes raciais e uma imagem medica que representa as domesticas como um perigo social, trazendo doenca e morte para familias da classe alta. Este estudo examina tambem o poder destas duas visoes simbolicas para a fundacao de servicos de saude maternal e infantil na Bahia dos anos 1930. Na Bahia, o sistema de saude publica comecou com uma enfase na saude das criancas abastadas, mas rapidamente se modernizou, priorizando a saude e o bem-estar das familias pobres. Este trabalho ajuda a esclarecer o processo de transicao de uma “maternidade servil” a uma “maternidade amparada” com todas as contradicoes ideologicas da medicalizacao da sociedade republicana.
