Abstract

La visionaria Ildegarda di Bingen (1098-1179) è autrice di scritti di medicina nei quali il tema del corpo femminile ha una parte notevole: il trattato Cause et cure, che le viene attribuito, si distingue per le numerose evocazioni delle specificità fisiologiche della donna, dei suoi mali e dolori, ma anche della sua forza e bellezza, cioè della sua capacità a trasmettere la vita. Ildegarda non è stata certo la prima in Occidente a trattare l’argomento e, anche se non cita nessun autore, attinge a diversi testi non esclusa la letteratura medica a lei contemporanea. Ma l’esistenza di tante possibili fonti di informazione niente toglie all’originalità del suo pensiero sul corpo della donna, in particolare sulla gravidanza quasi miracolosa che certe donne vivono in età avanzata; anzi, quel che scrive Ildegarda dà materia alla riflessione attuale, in un’epoca nella quale la scienza medica ha esteso i confini tra sterilità e fertilità, ma dove, a differenza della paternità tardiva, il desiderio di maternità della donna matura è soggetto a critiche nel nome della “legge della natura”.
