ABSTRACT COST of machinery downtime for planting and harvesting seasons is determined for 202 and 404-ha (500 and 1000-acre) corn and soybean farms. The princi-ple of oversizing planting equipment as insurance against time lost to breakdowns is evaluated. The use of two small planters is shown to be more profitable than one large unit on larger farms when downtime occurs in the planting season.
