In this second major paper assigned to students in English 302M, students are asked to find and evaluate a scholarly article on a topic interesting to them in their discipline. They then carefully and closely analyze the article through a series of activities, concluding in a 1,000-word Rhetorical Analysis essay where they identify the writers’ background, expertise, and context, the article’s purpose, use of language, use of evidence, primary argument, and intended audience. This supports the English 302 Learning Outcomes: critical reading strategies, identify, evaluate, and use research sources, and analyze rhetorical situations. Included are a Reading to be discussed before the assignment, the Assignment Prompt, a Grading Rubric for the Assignment, and Instructor’s Notes on how to incorporate the assignment into the 302 Classroom.
