Electronic Document Delivery:

Impact and Implications for Library Services at Houston Public Library
Authors: Gene Rollins;

Electronic Document Delivery:

Abstract

The Houston Public Library provides Electronic Document Delivery through Uncover, Magazine Index, and Business Index at the Central Library and the regional branches, as well as to remote users. Patrons use their credit cards to pay any charges. Documents can be printed out from the terminals or sent to the user's fax machine. Though the service is popular, use has been less than expected, in part because most patrons are unwilling to pay more than $3.00-34.00 per articlc. The new service has not reduced interlibrary loan, retrievals from closed periodical stacks, or reference requests. As the next step, the Houston Public Library plans to improve its clectronic information infrastructure and to dcvelop the necessary policies and procedures for the increasing use of electronic information.
