
The increase in computer technology and its use by both faculty and students marks the inevitable establishment of online distance learning as a viable teaching option within higher education, particularly in gerontology. This article discusses the importance of understanding faculty and students in order to provide successful distance education courses. Observations of students taking online gerontology courses, and a traditional classroom course, offered at the University of Southern California Andrus Gerontology Center, are presented for illustrative purposes.
